Six snapshots from Pudding Town

Dilly the duckling in a green courier cap hurrying along a pastel street while Biscuit, a big fluffy white dog with a pink polka-dot bandana, chases right behind her

Dilly the duckling is the newest courier in Pudding Town, and the first chapter of Dilly Delivers follows her first four days on the job. Every parcel has two ways to go: the long park way, easy but slow, or the short town way, quick but full of cars, puddles and yard dogs. Here are a few moments from those first rounds.

One thing to look out for: each day runs from morning to sunset. The first parcel goes out under a pink morning sky and the last one under a violet evening, when the windows light up and the street lamps glow. The shot at the top is from day four. Biscuit, the mayor’s dog, has slipped his lead again, and he loves parcels. Especially cake-shaped ones.

Dilly the duckling in a green courier cap squinting with effort as she hops high over a blue puddle on a pastel sidewalk, a sleepy rock with a daisy on top waiting ahead
Rule one, in Dilly’s own words: “Puddles: jump.” Keep holding jump and she flaps her wings to float a little further.
Dilly the duckling leaping over a cross orange guard dog with a curly tail that has run out of its gate onto the sidewalk
Day two, and a guard dog with a curly tail is having a grumpy morning. Rule three: “Dogs: run!”
Dilly the duckling waiting at the edge of a rainy street while a pink car with bunny ears in its back window drives past and a smiling mint car comes the other way
Rule two: “Cars: wait for a gap.” Look in the back windows: every car carries a passenger, a bear or a bunny.
Dilly the duckling hurrying along the sandy park path past a long-eared dog asleep in its gateway, while an orange cat sits on the fence nearby
The park way. A sleepy dog wakes at the first noise: a landing, a splash, a fast run. Walk softly. The cat on the fence is on your side.
Dilly the duckling smiling on a pink doormat in the rain next to Percy the penguin, whose eyes have turned into golden stars
Day three is rain all day, and Percy the penguin has been waiting for his ice cream. Urgent parcels earn a bigger time bonus.

Everyone in town waits by their door, and a parcel brought safe and sound makes their eyes shine like Percy’s. Bring one a little battered and they are still kind about it. Hazel the hedgehog, handed a sack of flour that has seen better days, only says: “Half of it is on you, Dilly! You look like a sugar-dusted duck.”

As Dilly put it on that rainy morning: “Rain? I’m a DUCK, Granny Plume!”
