Snapshots from the canopy, the great tree and the river

Tavo leaping off the back of Dumpling the capybara toward a big pink gem under a rainbow, in front of a white waterfall on Ribbon River

Once every hundred years, on Bloomnight, the Skybloom wakes and every island of the Thousandleaf Isles blooms with it. This Bloomnight, Princess Orla is to whistle the Wake Song. Then Baron Fanfaron rolls in with his traveling show, cries “Dazzle, my darlings!” and carries her off to be its star.

Tavo goes after her the fast way. He has never once used the stairs. Here are a few moments from the free part of his chase: the first three levels and the first boss.

Tavo, a boy with a topknot and a fruit basket on his back, swinging from a long liana high among tall jungle trees, a teal gem floating beside him
Sunrise Canopy, level 1. Jump into a liana to grab it, jump again to let go. Old Lento the sloth naps up here too, and mumbles a warning: “…zzz… mind the… piggy…”

Orla gets word out with leaf letters. The first one finds Tavo at the end of the canopy: “Climb, don’t jump. (You’ll jump.)” He reads it, says “Climb, don’t jump. Got it,” and jumps.

Inside a great hollow tree, Tavo throws a fruit at a blue, orange-spotted gecko poking out of a knot-hole, a glowing honeycomb on the wall behind them
Hollowheart, level 2, the climb inside the great hollow tree. The creatures here are covered in the Baron’s glitter, and one fruit knocks the sparkles off. This gecko announces itself with a loud “to-KAY!”, and once it’s free, it sneezes and scurries away.
Clatterhorn, a huge brown stag beetle with a gold star on his side, charging along the floor of a dark hall lit by amber resin while Tavo jumps up toward a low branch
At the end of the climb waits Clatterhorn, the Strongest Beetle in the Parade. Old Lento sums him up: “That beetle… is all horns… and no… brakes.” Listen for the clack-clack, hop up onto a low branch, and let him meet the wall.

Once the glitter is out of him, Clatterhorn is a different beetle: “Achoo! …Wait. Why was I yelling? Sorry, kid.”

Tavo crouching on the back of Dumpling, a calm capybara with an orange on its head, as they float under a low thorny branch on a blue river, a white heron in the reeds and a waterfall far behind
Ribbon River, level 3. Dumpling the capybara does the swimming; Tavo does the ducking. “Hop on, sweet pea. No rush.” “There’s a LOT of rush!” “Then hold on tight to it.”

The picture at the top is the end of the river: a rainbow in the spray and one big pink gem worth the leap. Dumpling has views on the falls ahead: “I don’t do falls, sweet pea. I do naps.” And every level hides three Wishseeds for anyone who looks in the right corners.

Orla’s next letter has a P.S. we can’t stop thinking about: “Is Dumpling still wearing the orange?” Yes. Yes, Dumpling is.

Levels 1–3 and the first boss are free to play in your browser at jungaloo.com; the full game is $4.99, paid once. More about the game is on its Jungaloo page.
