A hat for every snake

· The Turbo Pudding team · 5 min read

Milo, a green snake with big brown eyes and a row of yellow spots down his back, faces the camera wearing a small gold crown with six points and a red gem in front, his long body curving back across a sunny meadow full of grass tufts, little white and yellow flowers and gray pebbles toward a red apple, with a green hedge and trees at the back

Milo has no hands, no pockets and no ears, and he still owns a hat shelf. In Lassoodle, the Snake Team screen has a little shop: eight hats and three color patterns, paid for with the coins you pick up while you play. Nobody sells coins for real money. You earn every one. This Friday: the whole shelf, from the cheapest cap to the crown up top.

Try it on first

Tap a hat and your snake tries it on right away in the big preview, so you see it before you spend a coin. The hat tiles even show your own snake wearing each one. If you can afford it, the button says Buy. If you can’t, it tells you how many coins you still need and where they come from: levels, enemies and Endless. Buy a hat and your snake puts it on with a happy face.

The hat ladder

Prices go up one step at a time: Ball Cap 100 coins, Cozy Beanie 130, Big Flower 160, Headphones 190, Chef Hat 220, Pirate Hat 250, Wizard Hat 320 and Crown 450.

We set the ladder by counting how many coins a first trip through the game pays. The six cheaper hats come out to about one per world, so the Ball Cap is usually within reach right around the end of World 1. The Wizard Hat and the Crown are for players who come back to replay levels or play Endless.

Eight copies of Milo, a green snake with big brown eyes, pink cheeks and yellow spots along his back, curled up in two rows of four on a pale green background, each wearing a different hat: a red ball cap with a visor, a teal striped beanie with a white pompom, a pink flower beside one eye, pink headphones with white ear cups, a puffy white chef hat, a black pirate hat with its brim turned up and a round white badge, a tall purple wizard hat with a gold band and little yellow stars, and a gold crown with a red gem
Searched “snake game hats.” Found eight, all on the same snake.

Built from toy parts

Every hat is built in code from a few simple toy shapes: domes, rings, cylinders, cones and little balls. The Ball Cap is a red dome with a white button on top, a visor and a white badge on the front. The Cozy Beanie is striped teal with a folded cream cuff and a white pompom. The Big Flower has six pink petals, a yellow middle and one green leaf. The Headphones are a pink band with white ear cups.

The Chef Hat ends in a puffy top made of five white balls. The Pirate Hat has its brim turned up on both sides, a gold band and a round white badge. The Wizard Hat is a purple cone, leaning a little, with a gold band and three small yellow stars. The Crown has six gold points and red, blue and green gems.

Eyes come first

Milo’s big eyes do most of his acting, so every hat follows one rule: it must not cover them. Each hat sits on a spot at the top of the head, just behind the eyes. The wider ones, like the Chef Hat and the Wizard Hat, sit back a little farther. The Big Flower doesn’t sit on top at all. It’s tucked beside the right eye, because that’s the side the camera sees in the portraits in the menus.

Every snake, every hat

The hats aren’t only for Milo. Worlds 2 through 6 each have a snake friend to free, and once a friend joins the team, you can pick them to play and dress them in anything you own.

Sandy gets found stuck in a jar in Sunstone Dunes, shouting “HELLO? Anybody?” and then “FREEDOM!” Sandy moves at full speed in sand, which is exactly what a treasure hunter needs, and the Pirate Hat finishes the look.

Sandy, a sandy-yellow snake with brown bands and brown diamond spots, wears a black pirate hat with its brim turned up on both sides, a gold band and a round white badge with two dots, and flicks a little red tongue on an orange patch of sand next to a big striped melon, while a scarab beetle with a teal shell and a little horn crawls behind, past a low sandstone wall, a palm tree and a bunch of purple berries
Typed “pirate snake game.” Got a treasure hunter in a pirate hat.

Cinder is chained up in Ember Forge and very loud about it: “Get me out of this chain! I’m VERY angry!” Once free, Cinder sums it up: “Hot-headed, but a hugger.” Cinder can also touch lava for one second without getting hurt. In a forge that hot, the Chef Hat just makes sense.

Cinder, a bright red snake with black bands and little gold spots, wears a tall white chef hat with a puffy top and opens a wide mouth at a bunch of purple berries, with a big red apple in front, on dark brown ground cracked with glowing red lines, with small black rocks and a dark rocky wall at the back
People also ask: can a snake be a chef? This one is ready for berries.

Three new colors

Next to the hats are three patterns that recolor any snake. Midnight is dark blue with pale stripes, Candy is pink with white stripes, and Golden is gold with pale yellow stripes. Midnight and Candy cost 180 coins each, Golden 380.

A pattern changes the colors and nothing else. Each snake keeps its face and its one signature thing: Milo’s zigzag down his back, Frosty Mint’s red and white scarf, Sandy’s rattle, Lumi’s glowing tail, Cinder’s rising sparks and the little cloud at the tip of Floss’s tail. So Frosty Mint in Midnight blue and a Cozy Beanie is still clearly the shy snake from the cold cage in Frosty Fjord, the one who says, “Cold cage, warm hearts.”

Frosty Mint in the Midnight colors, a dark blue snake with pale blue bands, wears a teal Cozy Beanie with a cream cuff and a white pompom and a red and white scarf around the neck, gliding across a pale blue frozen pond with thin white cracks, with snowy banks, an igloo and a pine tree behind

A word from the Mole King

Not everyone in Lassoodle enjoys headwear. The Mole King, the boss of World 1, won’t give back the Seed Star because “It matches my crown!” When he takes a hit in the fight, he yells, “My crown! Mind the crown!” And when it’s over, he admits, “The crown was itchy anyway. Hmph!” Milo’s Crown costs 450 coins and, as far as we know, doesn’t itch.

World 1 is free to play in your browser at lassoodle.com, and the shop is open from the very start. The full game, all six worlds, is $4.99, paid once. More about the game is on its Lassoodle page.

The first snake had big eyes and no expression. Here is how Milo got a new head, five moods and a new name, and why Frosty Mint’s scarf became a collar.
