Three stars in the Sunny Orchard

Lassoodle’s first level: a green snake on a striped orchard lawn with berries, hedges and golden Sun Coins

Lassoodle’s first world, the Sunny Orchard, is free to play and takes about a coffee break per level. Count Crowbeak has stolen the six Seed Stars, every fruit on the islands is wilting, and Milo, a green snake with a big appetite, sets off with Granny Moss and a chatty sparrow called Pip to win them back. Here is how to finish all five stages with three stars.

How the stars work

You get one star for finishing a level and a second for finishing it under par, the target time shown in the corner. The third star asks for both: under par and every Sun Coin on the map. Each level hides three coins, and the ones that look out of reach usually are not. You can always come back for them later. Levels open as soon as you win the one before, with no star gates.

Two habits help everywhere. Boost only on long straight runs (hold Space or Shift, or the lightning button on a phone), and don’t fear the hedges: in the orchard, bumping into one is only a bump and never costs a heart.

Level 1: First Bite

The goal is sixteen pieces of fruit, and the level gives you a head start. Right in front of you is a trail of berries curling north. Follow it without stopping and you chain a combo before the first ten seconds are up, which is the fastest way to beat par. The trail points you towards the first Sun Coin, near the north edge. The other two sit in opposite corners of the lawn.

Level 2: Buzz Off!

Now the Buzzbees arrive, and they steal fruit. The answer is simple: get there first. If you are long enough, though, try your first lasso. Circle your body all the way around a bee and close the loop. The bee drops what it took and a little shower of fruit with it. On a level that counts fruit, one good loop can be worth several bites. Watch out for the patch of mud on the left: it slows you down, so cut around it rather than across.

Level 3: Hop Garden

Long hedges cut this garden in two, and the golden pears grow behind them. A golden pear counts as three fruit, and its bush grows a new one twelve seconds after you eat it, so a pear bush is the best spot on the map. The quick way over the hedges is the pair of jump pads. Here is the secret: two of the Sun Coins float in the air right above the hedges, exactly where the jump pads throw you. Bounce, and they are yours. The third hides deep in a corner.

The beetles patrol two square routes in the far half. They nibble tails, so never leave yours lying across their path.

Level 4: Granny’s Stroll

This is the one level in the orchard that is not about fruit. Granny Moss, a tortoise in round glasses and a raspberry headscarf, wants to walk home, and she only walks while you stay close to her. Halfway along she stops at a closed gate. Look for the switch off to the side, touch it and the gate opens. There is a checkpoint on the way, so a mistake does not send you back to the start.

The moles are the real test. When the ground shakes, a mole is about to pop up right there, so steer away from shaking dirt. A beetle in the far corner also heads for Granny. Loop it and it drops a shower of fruit. The level is also a dress rehearsal for what comes next.

Level 5: The Mole King

The Mole King is sitting on a Seed Star because it matches his crown. He hides under six holes and comes up in one of them. The dirt shakes first. Do not put your head on it, because he bonks whatever is on top. Once he is up, he stops to taunt you for a few seconds, and that is your moment: wrap a loop around the hole he is in.

The Mole King surfaces. Time to loop the hole.

The fight has three phases. In the second, an extra mound shakes and puffs out nothing but dust, so wait until he is really up before you commit, and he starts throwing dirt clods. In the third there are more of both. A ring on the ground shows where each clod will land, so keep moving and keep your loops wide. You start the fight long, with four hearts, and new hearts drop in now and then. Beat him and the orchard blooms again. As Milo puts it, it smells like apple pie.

What comes next

Five more islands are on the way: Frosty Fjord, Sunstone Dunes, Glowshroom Jungle, Ember Forge and the Candy Cloud Kingdom, each with its own boss and a new snake friend who joins your team. Until then, the Sunny Orchard is open, and fifteen Sun Coins are waiting.
