Meet the snakes, the tortoise and the crow

· The Turbo Pudding team · 5 min read

Granny’s Stroll in the Sunny Orchard: Granny Moss, a tortoise with a round green shell, a light green face with two small dark eyes and a raspberry headscarf, leans on her walking stick on the grass, and right beside her, Milo, a green snake with big brown eyes, a pink cheek and a row of yellow spots down his back, lifts his head toward the camera; behind them are a meadow with small white and yellow flowers, gray stones, a long green hedge and a tree

Lassoodle tells its story without stopping the game: while a level is already running, one or two short lines pop up in a corner, and there’s nothing to tap. So every character gets only a few words to make an impression. It’s Monday, so here’s the cast.

The picture at the top is Granny’s Stroll, the fourth level of the Sunny Orchard. Milo stays right by Granny Moss’s side, just as he promised.

Milo, the one with the appetite

The story starts with a theft. Count Crowbeak grabs the six Seed Stars: “Six Seed Stars, all MINE! Caw-haw-haw!” Granny Moss knows what that means: “Without them, the islands will wilt.” And Milo, a small green snake, has the last word: “No more fruit? Not on my watch!”

The game sums Milo up in one line: “Brave, a bit hungry, always joking.” Bees are stealing the fruit? “Then I eat it first. I was born for this.” Then come the beetles: “Beetles nibble tails? I only have the one!” In the game, he’s the balanced one, with “no weak spot.”

Granny Moss, who walks at her own pace

Granny Moss is a tortoise with a green shell, a raspberry headscarf, round glasses and a walking stick. In Granny’s Stroll, you walk her home. She sets the tone: “These old legs still walk. Stay close, dear.” Milo: “I’m your bodyguard. Your body-snake!”

The level is built around her. She has three hearts of her own, and a beetle along her path goes straight for her. She can’t open gates, so the snake touches the switch for her. Wander too far, and she stops and waits.

After that, Granny becomes the voice of experience. In the dark jungle, she reminds you that “Glowing mushrooms and lamps are your friends.” On the lava floors of Ember Forge: “The slabs sink behind you. Cross in one go.”

Pip, the sparrow who can’t stay quiet

Pip is a round, chatty sparrow with a chestnut cap, a cream belly and a green scout neckerchief. Pip lives in that corner of the screen and talks a lot. “I’m Pip! Sun Coins are shiny. Grab them!” Then: “Jump pads! Boing! I love boing!” And in the dark: “It’s dark! Or did I close my eyes?”

Pip is also the one who brings the news when a friend joins, with that friend’s special skill: “Frosty Mint joined the team! Better grip on ice!”

Five friends, five hiding places

Every world after the first has a snake friend locked up somewhere, and you usually hear them before you see them, in the third or fourth level. Frosty Mint is in a cage in the Frosty Fjord: “So cold in this cage... is somebody there?” Sandy is in a jar, Lumi in a lantern, Cinder in a chain and Floss in a birdcage. Each one joins the team after the boss of their world.

Floss can’t stop giggling: “Hee-hee! I’m in a birdcage! It’s not funny! Hee!” Milo: “The happiest prisoner I’ve ever met.”

Floss, a soft pink snake with big blue eyes, pink cheeks and a long body that fades from pink to pale blue, ending in a fluffy white cloud at the tip of the tail, lies on the pink floor of the Candy Cloud Kingdom among colorful sprinkles; in the back are a dark blue pool, a caramel-colored wall, a big cake block, a pink and white striped pillar and a pastel rainbow against a blue sky
Searched “snake game for kids.” This one giggles and ends in a cloud.

Floss is “a giggly cloud snake” in pastel pink, blue and yellow, with a little cloud at the tip of the tail, and gets longer, floaty jumps. Cinder is “hot-headed, kind inside,” a red snake with dark bands and glowing ember dots, and can touch lava for one second without getting hurt. Milo hears Cinder from across the forge: “Someone in the forge sounds a bit spicy.”

Cinder, a bright red snake with wide dark brown bands, small glowing gold dots and big orange-ringed eyes, slides across the dark brown floor of Ember Forge, cut into plates by thin glowing red cracks; small black rocks and dry spikes lie around, a bunch of purple grapes and a red and white spotted mushroom wait in the back, and a few sparks rise from the tail
Typed “snake game with lava.” Cinder says the floor is fine.

On the Snake Team screen, friends you haven’t freed yet show up as question marks with a note, like “Free me in World 4.” Once free, any of them can play any level.

The villains, one per world

Each world ends with a boss, and each boss gets a line or two to show who they are. The Mole King of the Sunny Orchard is, in the game’s own words, “a very proud mole.” The Walrus Warden of the Frosty Fjord has one rule, more or less: “Rule one: no sliding! Rule two: ALSO no sliding!” Milo asks the Moth Empress, “Why are you staring at that lamp?” Her answer: “...So pretty. Ahem! Darkness! Fear me!” In Ember Forge, Milo tells the Magma Golem, “Not a snack! I’m way too wiggly to eat!” The answer: “SNACK TALKS. FUNNY SNACK.”

The Sphinx Cat of the Sunstone Dunes guards her Seed Star with riddles. Milo tries his luck: “Is the answer ‘lunch’? It’s usually lunch.” She isn’t impressed: “Purr... wrong. Mind the plates, noodle.”

The Sphinx Cat lies like a sphinx in the middle of a sandy arena: a round tan cat with pointed ears, small black eyes, a pink nose and long whiskers, in a blue and gold striped headdress with a red gem in the middle and a golden beard under the chin; her tail ends in a dark brown tuft, a round wooden plate with a star sits on the sand beside her, a gold coin floats nearby, and behind a low stone wall stand palm trees, clay pots and pyramids under an orange sky
Search: “3D snake game with a boss.” She’d like a better answer.

Count Crowbeak himself is a vain, glossy crow with a long golden beak, a gold monocle, a tiny crown and a purple cape. In the Candy Cloud Kingdom, he sends Sprocket, his clockwork racing snake, to race you for three laps: “Sprocket, show the noodle how we race up here!” Milo isn’t worried: “I’m fast. And hungry. Mostly hungry.”

Count Crowbeak, a round black crow with a golden-orange beak, wide eyes, a gold monocle on a chain, a tiny gold crown, a red gem on his chest and a purple cape with a red collar, spreads his wings above the pink floor of the Candy Cloud Kingdom; behind him are a caramel-colored wall, a gold coin, a red apple, floating islands with lollipops, pink and white striped pillars and a pastel rainbow
People also ask: why is the crow wearing a monocle?

World 1 is free to play in your browser at lassoodle.com, with Milo, Granny Moss, Pip and the Mole King. The full game, all six worlds, is $4.99, paid once. More about the game is on the Lassoodle page.

Lassoodle sketchbook: how Milo got his face

The first snake had big eyes and no expression. Here is how Milo got a new head, five moods and a new name, and why Frosty Mint’s scarf became a collar.
