Lulla’s tail at work

· The Turbo Pudding team · 3 min read

Bubble Bend at night, seen from just above the bank: Lulla, a round pink axolotl with pink frilly gills and a pale tail fin, sits on a flat gray stone at the bottom of the pond, curled up a little, with her eyes shut in happy arches; a big dashed ring of pale pink dots stretches across most of the dark blue water around a small glowing white dot where the finger holds, and inside it sit Bloop, a round blue fish, and two Pips, green bunnies with leaf hats, each on a lily pad, while another Pip and Bloop sit just above the ring’s top edge; faint older ripple rings drift near the top, and cattails and little flowers line the green bank

Lulla is a tiny pink axolotl who can’t sing. Her tail makes ripples, though, and in Lullalotl every ripple wakes a sleepy friend who can. This Screenshot Saturday follows that tail through five ponds of Moonlit Hollow.

At the top of this post, Lulla is holding the water in Bubble Bend. The dashed ring shows how far her next ripple will reach, and two Pips and a Bloop are already inside it.

One tap in Lily Cradle

Everything starts with a tap. Touch the water, and Lulla flicks her tail, shuts her eyes happily and turns toward the spot in less than a tenth of a second. A ring of light spreads from where you touched, and every friend it reaches starts to sing.

A close-up of the bank of Lily Cradle at night: Lulla, a round pink axolotl with spotted pink frilly gills, rosy cheeks and a pale pink tail fin, sits on a flat gray stone with her eyes shut in two happy arches and a wide smile, just after a tap; up and to the right, a small fresh ring of light spreads on the dark blue water around a cluster of white bubbles, and higher up Pip, a green bunny with a leaf on its head, sits on a lily pad; brown cattails and small pink, white, yellow and purple flowers grow along the green bank
Searched: “what do axolotls do with their tails.” Make ripples.

Hold, then let go in Pebble Steps

After thirty taps, once at least two friends share the pond, Lulla picks up a new move: “Lulla learned a Big Swish!” Then comes a hint: “Hold the water… then let go!”

Keep a finger on the water for about a fifth of a second, and the charge begins. Lulla curls up, the dashed ring grows, and ten soft notes climb as it fills. One second later, it’s full. Let go, and one big ripple rolls out with a spray of bubbles. At full charge, it reaches almost twice as far as a tap, and every song it wakes pays up to one and a half times as much. That’s when the game cheers: “Big Swish!”

Pebble Steps at night: a bright ring of light spreads on the dark blue water with a spray of white and pale blue bubbles flying out around it, and a small pink lotus has opened right in its middle; beside the ring, Twinkle, a round yellow mouse with two little antennae, and a Pip, a green bunny with a leaf hat, sit on lily pads, with another Pip and Bloop, a round blue fish, higher up, and two smooth gray stones poke out of the water; at the bottom edge, Lulla, the pink axolotl, smiles on her stone with her eyes shut in happy arches
Typed: “how to make a big splash.” Hold, then let go.

A nap in Whisper Reeds

Lullalotl is meant to be calm, so it knows when to stop. After about four minutes of play in a pond, Lulla pulls a lily leaf up like a blanket and closes her eyes: “Lovely song! See you soon.” The music grows quieter, and friends who aren’t singing doze off too. To keep going, follow the hint: “Tap the water to play on.”

Whisper Reeds at night, close up: Lulla, the round pink axolotl, has pulled a green lily leaf with pale veins up to her chin like a blanket and sleeps on her flat stone with her eyes closed and a small smile, her frilly pink gills still fanned out; above her on the dark blue water, Leap, a teal flying squirrel with a little leaf cape, dozes on a lily pad with its eyes shut, next to a pale round patch of tall thin reeds growing out of the water; cattails and white and pink flowers line the green bank
People also ask: do axolotls nap? This one brought a blanket.

The Moon wakes over Reedy Hollow

Every song makes Glow, and when a pond has enough of it, its Moon wakes. The screen flashes warm, and every friend in the pond sings once more, one after another, each with a puff of tiny stars. “The Moon is awake!” Each pond holds one note of the Moon’s tune, and now the tune plays from the first note up to this pond’s. Down on the bank, a new light kindles on Lulla’s frilly gills, one for every pond she has woken.

All of Reedy Hollow, a round night pond with a thick green bank under a dark purple sky with tiny stars, at the moment its Moon wakes: five friends on lily pads sing at once, each sparkling with tiny white stars, two Pips, green bunnies with leaf hats, two Bloops, round blue fish with two little drops jumping above their heads, and Leap, the teal flying squirrel, in the middle; a soft reflection of stacked pale lines shimmers on the water near the top, and at the bottom edge Lulla, the pink axolotl, smiles on her stone while a soft glow lights the tip of one of her frilly gills
Search history: “is the Moon awake,” “why is my pond sparkling.”

Lily Cradle and Bubble Bend, the first two ponds, are free to play in your browser at lullalotl.com. The full game, all ten ponds, is $4.99, paid once. More about the game is on its Lullalotl page.
